The Italian Lega Pro Prima Divisione is the third highest in the country's professional football league system. Originally founded in 1935 as Serie C and then changing its name to Serie C1 in 1978, the league became known as the Lega Pro Prima Divisione in 2008 after a shake-up of Italian football. Consisting of 36 teams that are divided geographically into two groups of 18 clubs, the Lega Pro Prima Divisione promotes a total of four teams to Serie B and relegates a further six teams to the Lega Pro Seconda Divisione.
