The Scottish Premier League (or SPL as it is commonly known) was first created just over a decade ago in 1998 and there are 12 teams which compete in the league as it exists today. Between August and May each year the teams play one another at least 3 times in order to gain points and the team at the bottom of the table at the end of the season is relegated and replaced by the winners of the Scottish First Division.

After the first 33 matches are played, the league is divided into two groups of six and a further five matches are played by each team against other teams in their own group of six. Even if a team in the lower six manages to attain more points than a team in the upper six they will never be able to move higher than 7th position once the second phase of the season has begun.

There have been recent criticisms of this structure and the suggestion of introducing two more teams to form a 14 team league. Criticism has also been levelled at the unsurpassed dominance of Celtic and Rangers, which does not look set to change any time soon.

Celtic and Rangers are the only two teams to have ever won the SPL since its inception. However, the SPL is watched on average by more Scottish people than any other professional football league, per captita. As such placing a bet and getting the best odds for SPL matches is vital. Odds generally favour the established top teams. For example, in an upcoming fixture in which Celtic face Hamilton, Celtic are 1/4 to win, whilst Hamilton are 17/2 to take victory. However, this does make for some exciting match-ups when the underdogs do inevitably win on occasion.
